The repair room

Questions riders ask before touching a tire.

VoxCycle courses teach general techniques, while your bicycle manufacturer’s instructions and a qualified mechanic remain important for unusual equipment or damage.

How do I know whether I have a flat?

Check whether the tire feels unusually soft, inspect for visible debris, and compare the pressure with the tire maker’s guidance. A slow leak may not be obvious at first.

What tools should I carry?

A compatible spare tube or patch kit, tire levers, a pump or inflator, and the tool required for your axle are a sensible starting point.

Can every tube be patched?

No. A clean small puncture may be patchable, but a torn valve area, damaged casing, or stretched tube calls for replacement or professional assessment.

What is the difference between Presta and Schrader?

They are different valve designs and require compatible pump fittings and tubes. Identify the valve before buying a spare.

How do I avoid pinching a new tube?

Add a small amount of air to shape the tube, work the bead gradually, and inspect both sides before fully inflating.

When should I visit a bike shop?

Choose a shop when the rim, tire casing, axle, brake system, or tubeless setup is damaged or unfamiliar, or when the wheel will not seat safely.

Do VoxCycle courses fit every bicycle?

The fundamentals transfer widely, but wheel standards and tire systems vary. Select a course close to your bicycle and verify its specifications.

Can I learn without a workshop stand?

Yes. Many repairs can be practiced with the bicycle supported carefully, though a stand can improve comfort and visibility.
